The UAE capital announced last month that Abu Dhabi will host the first-ever Special Olympics UAE Games from March 19 to 22. More than 650 athletes with intellectual disabilities are expected to participate in the games. Teams will go head-to-head against each other at New York University Abu Dhabi in a variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, swimming and powerlifting. In the celebrations leading up to the UAE Games, the Special Olympics Flame of Hope will tour Abu Dhabi on March 14. A tradition since 1981, the ceremony will see law enforcement officers carrying the flame. The opening ceremony will then take place on March 19 to officially inaugurate the games, followed by three days of intense competition.
